Cheryl, so very sorry to hear this, but, you are certainly not a 
failure! If the dog doesn't want to work effectively, there's not 
too much else you can do other than what has been suggested to 
you.  My first dog didn't work out, and I experienced similar 
feelings of being a failure as you've expressed, but it takes 2 
to make this effort work effectively.
