Lyn and Jewel,
American Leather makes exactly what your talking about./ We have several and use them for our Child Vision Companion Dogs. It is leather, has the support handle coming straight up the center and over the backstrap. You can also slide a guide harness handle thru the back strap and it attaches to the front of the harness. The kids can pull themselves up with the support strap. The down side is that it is leather and spendy. About 400-500 bucks. Hope this helps.

Hi Jewel,
I saw a balance harness a couple weeks ago on the harness of a dog who assisted his owner in keeping her balance. The person was not blind.

The body of the harness looked much like a typical guide harness made from nylon.  The handle is small and stands upright placed on the top of the back strap. It seemed to be made of very stiff nylon - not sure if the nylon covered metal or something else that is very stiff that would support the person's leaning on it.  The dog has to be tall enough to have the person easily reach the little handle.

I'm not sure if this kind of a harness could be used to guide with.  I'm wondering if a regular guide harness could be modified to have the little support handle attached to the top of the back strap.  It wouldn't interfere with the action of the guide handle.

What say you, guide dog harness makers out there!

Lyn and Landon
