He may just not be able to handle freedom. 
I'm sorry. You may be able to monitor him if you have bells or a collar
with tags that jingles. 
Or you may have to keep him on leash with you or in a crate when you
can't or don't want to keep him close by. 
And you'll need to decide if this is something you can and want to live
with for the next eight or ten years. 
I'm sorry, it's a miserable position to be in, as yous imply can't be
with him every single second.

I let him off leash a little bit at a time after about three weeks of
all on leash when I got home. I let him off leash outside only in a
fenced in yard. In the yard he eats stuff out of the garden. Inside he
gets on the table and eats stuff ie crumbs and "cleans our kitchen
floor. I do obedience every day.
