Hello!

I think people feel that dogs, guide or otherwise, are public property. they
seem to feel this way with babies as well. Yesterday someone asked me if he
could pet my dog. I said, "No, but thanks for asking." He was OK with that.
However, there are many times when people are just plain rude. As everyone
else has said here, it's our choice.

Sometimes, when I have time, and it's a question of letting a child pet
Hazel. I explain that my dog is working. I tell them that Hazel has her
working clothes on and point out the harness. When she is waring her working
clothes, I continue to explain, no one should pet her. Of course, I don't
always have the time for such explanations, and sometimes I just don't want
to stop.

I would say it is the woman's problem. That is presumptuous for someone to
think that their kid or anyone else should be able to pet your dog if they
ask. That's just ridiculous, and I think you did what you felt you needed to
do. Let it go. <Grin>

guilty for saying no. Oftentimes I'll let small children pet the dog but
explain why it's great that they asked. Other people don't want their dog
petted at all and it really is a personal choice. If you explained that it
was a service animal and was working and that you'd rather him/her not be
petted at this time, then you did all you could. Some people will be
irritated no matter what we do so I wouldn't worry about it.

me to tell her no? I tried to be as polite as Possible. Do any of you have
any tips on what I should next time that happens again.
