I have only seen them go and sniff the ashes after the fire is gone. They are probably looking for some charred food that only they would dare to eat! I have noticed many dogs will lay in front of the fireplace to keep warm. They will often look in there and seem to become entranced with the sparkling flames. Intelligence is always claimed but rarely proven!
