[nagdu] Crisis Averted!

Alysha,

Congratulations and good work. Sounds like a good solution for everyone.

Poodles are becoming more common from several programs, but still a bit hard
to get, and you have to show a strong need for the hypoallergenic dog to get
one. Also, or so I hear, that you can handle one (though I don't know what
that means). They are wondrous creatures, but fiddly and temperamental and
even the most mellow poodle is way high strung next to a high strung labbie
type. /smile/ Getting the proper mix of health and temperament in a
breeding program has, from what I have heard and hear, been difficult and
not as cost-effective as the programs like (with reason!).

I chose poodle partly to avoid future problems over other people's
allergies, and I like spirited, energetic animals. Having never had a
poodle and using labs as the model for high-enery, I had no idea what I was
actually getting myself in for. /lol/ My poodle is, it seems,
exceptionally mellow as a representative of her breed, and her temperament
is outstanding. I would hate to have a hyper, temperamental one. /lol/
Wouldn't trade her for the world, of course, but I can understand why
they're blazing their way to the top of list of most frequently used guide
dog breeds.

I think Giant Schnauzers have been tried, but I've never met one and haven't
followed up to see how that worked out. I think some programs provide
boxers or dobies or something else I can't remember that are easier on
allergies, but I'm not real sure of the status there either. Too busy
keeping up with my wild and wonderful poodle. /smile/

Good job on getting your conflicts resolved, and thanks for the update!

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to give you a quick update on my issue with my coworker's
allergies. We bought 6 air purifiers that we scattered all around our
working space, and they seem to have done the trick. He's no longer, to my
knowledge, complaining of any allergy-related symptoms, and management has
assured me that me and my dog won't be restricted from common areas in the
building. So thank you all for your responses, and I'm so relieved this
turned out alright! I wonder why guide dog schools don't train more
hypoallergenic breeds to prevent these things from happening altogether.

Alysha
