Julie,

I sometimes unconventionally use sniff breaks still to get the same effect.
Or maybe we'll just sit and chat for a couple of minutes if Ms. Poodle isn't
feeling like keeping her head in the game. This isn't so much of a problem
with her as a grown up, but I still try to keep her motivated on boring
walks to new and exciting routes. /smile/ I do find that maintaining a
proper balance of play and running exercise in her off-duty time makes a
huge difference in how she works over all. But I still find myself
struggling way too much with keeping that balance where we live right now,
so I have come up with little motivators and ways to make her work more fun
and exciting. /smile/

She also likes to find, so putting her on a nice find command is a big pick
me up for her. /smile/ The more challenging, the better! She's really
pepped up by a chance to lead the way to find the door when DD is along,
because she can show off for him. I still have to remember to remind him to
just let her get on with it so that he can observe how clever and brilliant
she is. /lol/

She also seems to do better when I use the clicker to let her know that I've
noticed what she's doing and how good she is. So I've kind of taken to
using it as a communications tool that way even though she doesn't need it
for training. Anything to keep the poodle happy, I guess. /smile/

Lisa,

I've found that the best way to get moving faster is to vary the route. If
I do the same thing day after day, I'll notice that our pace gets slower and

slower, at least on the way there.

I use treats too. Just a random treat at the corner seems to perk him up a
bit. I just use his regular kibble for treats because he is highly food
motivated and I have to be very careful of his diet.

You might also try the happy voice along with just moving faster yourself.

This is something pretty unconventional, but when Monty was younger I used
to stop and play with him every few blocks just to break up the routine. He

knows to jump up on cue and I sometimes use this when I know he needs either

stress relief or perking up. He likes to jump up and when he gets to, there

is an immediate difference in his work. But like I said this is pretty
unconventional, just thought I'd toss it out there as food for thought.

Julie
