Hi Mardi,
I commend your ability to find a private trainer who would train a guide dog
for you. I have a question. What was the whole process like? Did you have
to have a lot of sighted help in addition to the private trainer for those
phases of training when the dog was gradually transitioning his or her
allegiances from the trainer to you? Was there time divided between the
trainer to you in terms of where the dog resided before he or she was
trained? Before I trained with my second guide with a different
school/program than where I trained with my first, I decided to try and
owner-train with the help of a private trainer who had owner-trained her own
guide dog. Unfortunately, the dog and I didn't work out as a team, and I
was recommended to the great program I've trained with since '98. During my
time with this private trainer, the dog stayed with her for a period of
time, then with me. So, I'm just curious about the contrasts and
similarities in your experience between program-training and a private
trainer, as well as your challenges and celebrations, and how the allegiance
transitions on the part of the dog take place. Also, were all three of your
dogs bought from breeders or were they dogs who were rescued? I always like
to learn about different training experiences.
Best,
Nat and Liam Joshua
