[nagdu] School Applications

Welcome Miranda!

I'm Julie, one of the moderators. I have owner trained my guides, so I
can't speak to wait times during the application process because I have
no idea. Quite a few people do apply to several schools at once though.

Before finding Monty and deciding to owner train again, I did research
my options in regard to guide dog programs and the time between
beginning the application and placement. The shortest time was claimed
by GDB at 6 weeks, but I think this would reach the level of a miracle.
*smile* Possible, but not probable. There is a lot of paperwork to be
filled out and returned by others as well as doctors appointments and an
interview. Six weeks seems a crazy short amount of time to accomplish
all that, but apparently it has been done. Most of the programs fall
into the range of 4 to 6 months between the application and placement.
The really small programs have the longest wait times extending up to 1
year. As Tami has mentioned the more particular you are with the type
of dog you will accept the longer the wait will generally be. Also if
you have additional disabilities or an unusual situation that requires
additional training for the dog that can extend the wait time too.

At any rate calling or emailing to inquire about the status of your
application is totally acceptable. You are the consumer after all.
*smile* If you aren't satisfied with the results you are getting, I'd
move on, but that's just me. I'm not very good at waiting or being
patient. Something I'm working on. *smile*

Anyway that is the very long version of saying hello, welcome to the
list and good luck!
Julie
