Hi every one, Since I have owner trained all of my dogs with the help of a
private trainer, I probably do a lot of things that the schools would frown
upon. I do have rules for my dogs though, and I am pretty strict about
them. I do give the occasional treat of people food, but it is never given
in the restaurant or off the dinner plate. I wait until we have left and
are out side.Even when I feed Shaman his food at home,he waits until I give
him permission to eat it.I once forgot to tell him he could eat and about
10 minutes later he was still sitting in front his food bowl waiting to
eat.I can only give ice cream to some of my dogs as not all of them can
tolerate it.I started giving ice cream to my dogs in the summer as it does
help to cool them down in the hot Arizona heat.Lily and Nala loved it and
so does Shaman. I only give a table spoon of vanilla ice cream to them, and
again it is never in side the restaurant. They don't get it often. That is
why it is such a treat for them, because they know they only get it on a
special occasion. Most of the time if I give a treat, it is a regular dog
treat. My dogs seem to like Pupperoni and that is the treat that they
receive most of the time when I am doing any training.I think that a little
bit of people food will not hurt them but that is only my opinion, and I do
respect the opinion of others as to what they want to feed their dogs. If I
were out working my dog with a friend and their guide dog,and that friend
did not feed people food or treats to their dog, I would refrain from doing
so with my dog as I feel it would not be fair to give my dog something in
front of the other dog.I also don't give my dogs things like bread or
sweets like candy ect. I will give them a small piece of meat for a
treat. They don't seem to like things like raw veggies although they will
eat cooked carrots and green beans and sweet potato. They also seem to like
Milk Bones.Shaman is on a special food diet because he has some allergies
so I am careful to give him treats that I know he can tolerate.I do think
that people should do what ever they feel is best for their dogs.Again,
only my opinion. Have a great day, Mardi and Shaman and Neechee,GDIT.
