[nagdu] owner training

Tami et al,

The other thing that seems to be misconstrued, is that one's State laws
override the ADA or other related civil rights laws that protect persons
using service dogs as defined March 15, 2011. Keep in mind, the new
definition, what the greater protection provides, but also your State's laws
as they might, in some cases, indeed provide protections than the broader
laws. However, certification is not a requirement of a handler, but it may,
in somce cases, may be a requirement for dogs in training per some State
laws. Again, all of this gets so tricky, sticky and sometimes icky, but if
anyone ever has questions governing their access rights, post it on this
site, and let's talk about it. It's a great venue for all of us to learn
from each other whether we are very knowledgeable about these things, or are
just entering the world of service dog use.

Warmly,

Steve

William,

I'm just catching up after internet withdrawal from out in the sticks.
/smile/

Certification is not required for a service dog, including a guide dog.
The dog must be specifically trained to perform work for a person with a
disability. Naturally, the dog must also behave appropriately in public, be
clean, flea-free, etc., etc.

So I hear a lot about certification and get really snarly about it now
instantly. /lol/ In my own opinion, if my dog's behavior and training and
work do not speak for themselves, then that says it all. Same is true for
program-trained guide or other service dogs. Most of the owner-trainers I
know expect the same of themselves and their dogs that the other guide dog
users I know do. /smile/

Andyway, no certification required. And that's the way I want to keep it!
/grin/
