Hi Mark,
I wish you and your new dog the best as a new team. That's one big dog you have there.  He sounds like a really good dog. 
My first dog a golden use to like to look at birds. One time I was outside the doors of Briarcliff college talking to a teacher and my dog jumped up in harness. I didn't know what was going on and the teacher said the pigeons are swooping down near us and then flying. My labs like squirrels more than birds.
