[nagdu] retirement

Hi, Hannah,

I think you are definitely on the right track. While the university
lifestyle may not have been the right working environment for Princess, I
think you will find that a larger guide dog training program will be able to
find you a dog that is well-suited, and in fact thrives in the active and
social atmosphere of campus. In fact, guide dogs were originally developed
primarily to help young, active blind people get on with their professional,
educational, and social endeavors. It may take some discipline on your part
to ensure that the new dog knows when it is working and how it is expected
to behave, and to make sure that the hoards of students and teachers at the
college understand that this is not a pet or therapy dog to help them get
their "dog fix", but a working dog with an important job to do. What I used
to do when people asked to pet or feed my dog at inappropriate times was to
ask them if they would expect the police officer with a K-9 police dog or
sniffer dog to let them play with or feed that dog.

Good luck and Best wishes,
Ann

Bibi,
Thank you for the advice. I will keep trying to get a hold of someone.
I don't think I'm going to go back to Pilot though. I want to go to a school
nearby so I can get more support and now that I learned the hard way of I
should not request specific breeds, I think Guide dogs for the blind will be
my next school.

hi, Hannah,
My other guide dog Freedom David Berry had to be retired after seven months.
As for Pilot returning phone calls, it depends on who gets the messages and
when they call back.
I would try to contact them again to see what happens and when you're ready,
go back for another guide dog.
Only you can make that decision as there are times when some people end up
sticking with a cane which there's nothing wrong with that.
I'm still using my cane even when I drive my power chair for the time being
as I felt I needed to do some refresher with it.
Best wishes to you and hope that the father in the skies will help to find
you another four-legged furry partner to be with.
Bibi
