[nagdu] Barking

Nicole,

Yes, I have heard of barking as a taught behavior. Generally it's used as
an indication of an emergency medical need. I've heard of telephones
designed with one large button the dog can push that speed dials 911, then
the dog is taught to bark. The 911 facility is informed beforehand of the
situation and if a call from the number with a dog barking occurs, it means
that immediate medical attention is needed.

I have also heard of using barking as a means to get help from a neighbor or
passerby when the handler needs help, but isn't able to get to a phone or
communicate the need.

I'm sure there are other uses for barking that could be useful to the
handler. these are just the two I know of that come immediately to mind.

Julie

Subject: [nagdu] Barking

Has anyone ever heard of a dog barking as part of his/her job? Are people
allowed to ask if the barking is part of the dog's job? Just trying to
figure out how to help define "excessive barking" and some of the problems
that a definition could cause.
