[nagdu] leaves and sticks

Curious question, whenever I take pup out to relieve and or play, she picks up sticks and or leaves and will eat them. She won't just play or do her business, she will leaves and sticks from off the ground. Both of these behaviors are with her out of the harness. When in harness she will not go for items on the ground. I have heard differing opinions of this eating leaves and sticks. some say all dogs need a certain amount of roughage in there diet. Others say no way to that theory. Its an annoying behavior, one that I don't like, and one that I would rather not continue to dig in her mouth to retrieve the items. If anyone has any help, please let me know.
