[nagdu] They know the dog is working?

Excessive? How about harsh. Did you ever do any training about ignoring
people that either included positive reinforcement/redirection in addition
to correction or did not include any correction? If you did not do any
training on this or did training with only correction, then you are being
mean to your dog. Corrections are for when nothing else works. It is not
fair to your dog to be punished without first being taught the rules in a
more pleasant way.

I do not know how to say this without point-blank being rude, but I flat
tell people please do not bother my dog, he is working. When someone reaches
their hand and I feel my dog's head move or his body language changes, I
just say excuse me but the dog is working. Now I do have somewhat of an
advantage over some guide dog users as I do have some vision and can tell
when people are approaching and that my dog has been distracted. The big
thing is you have to be able to say to the dog, leave it, no, give it a
correction with your leash, and do not be afraid to make it obvious that you
are correcting your dog by snapping the leash hard. I know this might sound
excessive to some but I am on my second dog, I live in a small rule
community where everyone knows everyone and after five years they have
finally got the idea that I get the right away at corners and I do not want
them talking to or trying to pet my dog. There I did I deleted all the all
the that guide dog foundation reference out of it okay

Rebecca, you missed the point. Abigail knows what she wants. And, no, just
because someone knows what he/she wants does not mean that that person knows
what to do.

Abby,
Figure out what you want. Do you want these people interacting with your
dog? If so, how and when.
Figure out what you want and then you'll know what you need to do.

Hi Abby,
Hope you had a great Holiday too and have a happy new year!
I get this a ton, and I used to just ignore the people and give Pascal a
correction if he was getting distracted. A week or so ago, I was at the
grocery store and some guy was walking by and he said to the dog, "Oh, I see
you are working, so I won't pet you." But, then he started to make clicking
noises and continued to talk to Pascal! I told him politely that the noises
and talking to him was still distracting to him and his work. I don't think
he cared, some people... GRRR Anyways, I think you did the correct thing. We
can't control the idiots out there, but we can control the dog when they get
distracted.
Also, since the people at your Mom's work are like family, maybe you might
want to allow a few minutes for people to interact with Jada out of harness.
But, if you're in a public place, that may be hard to do.
Hope this helps!
Deanna and Pascal

Hi all,
I'd like to start this out with saying I hope you all had a great holiday.
And hope the new year is good for you and your furry friends.
Now I have a serious question for you all?
My mothers employees are almost like family. Mother has been at her place of
employment for over 30 years, and her staff all love dogs.

This one woman walked up to Jada this morning and started trying to get jada
to play with her. Jada was in harness, and since we were in public, I
corrected her for reacting. The woman then continued talking to jada saying
"sorry puppy. I didn't mean to get you in trouble, I know I shouldn't be
talking to you because you're working."

What do/would you guys do in this situation? Since this happens every time I
go to work with my mother.
