[nagdu] We're going! We're going! We're going to NYC!

Rebecca,

B&B's are subject to the ADA in regard to service animals only if they have
more than a certain number of guest sleeping rooms. I remember looking this
up a couple of years ago...I want to say it's 6 or more rooms. So if a B&B
only has two guest rooms, they don't have to allow your guide.

With that said, I've found that B&B's are a lot more welcoming of guide dogs
than I expected. Even the ones that say no pets may be agreeable if they
know it's a well trained guide dog. Or sometimes they say no pets because
they have a dog of their own in the home and don't want to run the risk of a
dog fight under the dining room table. If they know your dog won't be a
party to that sort of behavior, you will get a better reception.

When my son and I went to Alaska, we stayed in a B&B. I didn't take Monty
because there were too many things I wanted to that I couldn't figure out
how to do with him...like kayaking. Anyway the B&B was a no pets place, but
when she found out I had a guide dog at home, she expressed a sincere wish
that I had brought him. she even offered to watch him while we had gone
kayaking. Very sweet of her.

Darryl, Have fun!
Julie

What doesn't impress you about the size of the hotels in NYC? Serious
question, what were you expecting?
As for a host family, or b&b, you could do this, though remember it's
Christmas so you may not have as many options as you'd have at other times
of the year. Remember that host families don't need to welcome your pup.
B&B's do, but they could always tell you they're "all booked" or "gone the
week of Christmas".

You'll have a good time. Remember this is a trip you *want* to do. If you no
longer want to do it, then don't. You could always do a smaller trip at a
different time of year if you need to start out differently.

Hi!
I posted earlier in the spring about wanting to go to NYC over Christmas.
the first - and most volatile - part of booking this is now completed... we
bought our flights! We were able to book a nonstop flight for the price of
a 1-stop flight with layovers in Chicago or Houston... so one plane, no
worries about deplaning and having time/ability to take Jenny out to
relieve... Both flights are nonstop through Newark.

I have several questions:
1) We are not impressed by size and price of hotels in NYC. We are
considering staying in a B&B or with a host family in the city. Has anyone
done this? Pros/Cons?
2) We're buying a New York Pass, including entrance fees for like 75
attractions in the city. Any recommendations?
3) I am slightly intimidated by the amount of people in the city, the size
of Grand Central terminal, etc. Any pointers on how to just chill out and
not pass this freaked-outness onto my dog?
I am sure there's more... but we're GOING!

Excited Daryl and Jenny (who doesn't understand all the happiness, but
here's her squeaker toy!)
