thanks for your input all.
yes, Julie, i agree with you in that i would like to feel the tip so i know how much is being cut.  hmmm.  maybe i'll just stick with what i am doing.
i did try a friend's grinder but, it was so slow that i would have to spend loads of time on a task that my dog is already not thrilled with.  :)
