Legally, she's in the wrong. therapy dog or no, her practice is a place of
public accommodation even though it is privately owned. Lots and lots of
businesses are privately owned. It doesn't exclude them from following fire
codes, or the ADA...rules are rules. If her dog doesn't like other dogs,
then she needs to crate him or make other arrangements for her dog so you
have the option to go to your appointments with your guide dog. Allergies
and insurance are just excuses. Perhaps if the office were an allergy
specialist I might buy the allergy thing, but 99% of the time, it's simply
an excuse. Curiously, if her clients are allergic to dogs, why does she
have a therapy dog in the office?
Whether or not you find a new therapist or pursue some sort of remedy for
this situation, is entirely up to you. We all can only do what we can do
and you have to choose your battles according to your own set of values,
needs, energy level and motivation. I've let some things go and I've
pressed other issues.
Best of luck!
Julie

Subject: [nagdu] service dog in a private practice
Hi All!
I see a therapist who happens to have a therapy dog.
Her dog Cody does not get along with other dogs, which means that I can not
bring Jada to therapy with me.
But one day I forgot my cane at home and my therapist told me that Cody
would not be there that day. When I asked my therapist if I could bring Jada
in with me, She said no.
I was confused even more by the next statement of that she has some clients
who are allergic to dogs, and the endurance company she uses doesn’t like
dogs in her office.
Should I have fought this or was I right to let it go?
Unfortunately this is now a mute point since i have had to start doing phone
sessions with my therapist, but just curiosity of mine wanting to ask
opinions.
Thanks,
