Hi all!
My Jada likes to grunt when she lays down as well. I also take it to mean that she's happy to rest after a long day of working. She whines when she wants to play, or when I have to leave her with a friend to go do something and I come back into her line of vision.
I did a concert this weekend, and could not take her up on stage. So I had my mom hold her in the audience. When I came forward from the ensemble to do a solo, Jada stood up and started whining.also something new. When I put her in a down stay and walk away even for a short distance and even if she can still see me, she will wine for me to come back or call her.

Some of the noises mean something, while others as far as I can tell are just him grumbling. My girlfriend has a yellow lab that also makes the grunt when she flops on her bed after being out all day. to me it just sounds like she is happy to lie on her soft bed.
