Dear john and Molly,
Although each person is trained by different instructors, and since I wasn't in class with you at Pilot during your training class, I'm not sure what to make on this one.
I worked with two guide dog schools, but three instructors who did their training differently.
Sometimes, I worked with other trainers who didn't train my guides directly.
Although I understand the reasoning for what Pilot has told you, there's still a safe way of allowing your canine friend to run around.
Still, caution does need to be taken.
I have let Odie run around in a fenced in area to play, roll around to get his energy out.
Despite he's eleven years old, I find he still needs to do that.
I will only do it if a friend/neighbor from my apartment complex happens to be outside with me and they can let me know what is going on.
There's a leash which is called the long-line obedience leash you can purchase at any pet store that can be used to allow your furry partner to run around.
The leashes can go up to thirty feet maybe, but I'm not really sure.
I used this particular leash when I had my first guide dog and it came in handy.
We live in an apartment complex where there was no closed off area, so we had to go with the long-line obedience leash.
If you decide to purchase this item, know that it is going to take time, paitients and practice upon making sure that your dog has a good recall.
Using the LOL can also be good for obedience sessions too.
If your dog doesn't respond to your come command, you can easily gather up the LOL and reel her back to you quickly.
If you have any questions on the long-line obedience leash, feel free to email me off list at:

so there's not a lot of list trafic or an on-going thread.
Sincerely:
Bibi and MAR son Odie
