Do you need to prepare your dog for winter? No. Mother Nature does that. Dogs naturally blow their summer coat and grow in a thicker winter coat. The Golden Guy already has his in here in Michigan.
Some people notice their dogs shivering when the temperature drops, while other dogs tolerate or enjoy the frigid weather. If you notice your dog shivering or dancing around a lot in harness, especially when you're waiting at bus stops or hanging out outside, you can purchase a coat for her.

If you can train your dog to tolerate booties, those are also a good idea to protect from the cold, ice clumps forming between paw pads, and from the harsh road salt.
I use Pawz boots on my dog during winter to protect his paws. They are latex, thin, and form-fitting to the foot.
I hate the Ruff Ware boots that many schools give out because the dogs really seem to hate and act goofy in them. Those boots prevent dogs from walking naturally, and remove the feeling of contact between their foot and the ground. Also, the 1st winter I had the Golden Guy, the friction in those Ruff Ware boots ripped his dew claw sockets open, so I have sworn off those things for good.

I think some folks use Musher's secret to protect their dogs paws during winter, but don't quote me on that.

Also during winter, I keep a dish cloth and diluted white vinegar spritz on hand to wipe off any salt from his legs and under belly.
