It's that way here as well.  The big streets are marked, mostly, but usually anything smaller than a moderately large road has no sign.  Depending on the last flood/hurricane/catastrophy... We won't have signs for months or years. 
We also don't have North, south, east, and west. New Orleans is not a square city, so our directions are based off of landmarks.
