[NAGDU] leader dog for the blind denile

Well basically, sighted folks never seem to know street names, or East or
West. That's sometimes not true but I'm generalizing.
I like to know street names and all of that stuff, but sometimes there are
streets with no name, like a horse with no name I suppose--smile
The more info you have about your area though, the better off you'll be of
course.
I suppose what you need to know is not necessarily names, but have some idea
how to get somewhere, anywhere, even if it means walking around a block or a
route you like to walk or would like to walk or a shopping mall, anything.
Good luck to everyone out there.

It's that way here as well. The big streets are marked, mostly, but usually
anything smaller than a moderately large road has no sign. Depending on the
last flood/hurricane/catastrophy... We won't have signs for months or years.
We also don't have North, south, east, and west. New Orleans is not a square
city, so our directions are based off of landmarks.

My husband, who has lived here all his life, doesn't know the street names,
except for the really main ones.

I'd be up a creek if I went to a guide dog school. Here I know where things
are by landmarks, counting blocks or using known locations as reference
points. I know the courthouse is west right after I cross the first traffic
lighted intersection. I've done that route thousands and thousands of times
and I can't tell you what half the street names are that I cross to get
there. It is simply information that I don't need or really want.
