[NAGDU] NAGDU Digest, Vol 145, Issue 28

I have vision-meets-balance issues. I don’t see peripherally, so when Metukah puts her head down or goes to sniff, it will be too late to correct - and I may not be balanced. The solution when I discussed this was that although it wasn’t standard practice, to use a head halter. We use Holt, or Halti. She can open her mouth, pant, and even eat. I mean just a training treat or something because she can open her mouth halfway, not all the way. It also allows drinking. It’s just a head steering aid, and it tells me instantly when she is about to move her head out of walking range.

As an aside,, we up to now have worked on leash, not handle, for six years. Julie has been helping me a lot to get her ready for harness handle, and will shortly be making one to fit her. But in getting ready I have been using a training harness in the interim, and simply using the leash and halter as usual, clipped on my belt and holding it like always, independent of the training harness. No problem. But back to the issue.

The traininer and I recognized how awesome Metukah is, even though the curious nose wasn’t going away, and so develped this strategy to include and work around it. It simply keeps her head up where it belongs when she gets tempted, and if she gets to the phase between thought and action, I can catch it and it is a one fingertip pad touch correction in a little sewn finger loop - the way we work - extremely light on leash. It is relationship, and communication, not pulling.

Here’s the other thing. We both know each others’ intelligence. We respect each other a lot. It is sometimes astonishing how affective it is to have a full sentence English conversation, with full intention and language, and subtlety, discussing desire, boundaries, feelings, and the importance of something. She gets it. We have never done discipline. Well, correction. I have raised my voice twice in seven years, but only because she was occupied and didn’t hear me at first and react. Here’s the caveat. If you are going to lay out your case to your dog, he or she will get it. But *only* if you believe it is possible. Hope this helps.
