[NAGDU] For Tracy, dog food question

Tracy,
We made the decision early on to feed optimally for long term health and long life, having lost dear ones to things like diabetes which we believed a long term feeding issue with commercial foods. We didn’t now back then what we know now. Those were the days of things like “Purina, all you add is love”.

Since then, we follow some very informed people who do a lot of continual research. Like we eat organic, so too do we feed our dogs. W give them fresh raw meat per meal, and then, super high quality kibble.

One food we dropped was natural balance. The ingredients weren’t up to our research standard. Then once, in a pinch, I picked up a roll of natural balance that is packed like a big sausage. Immediately, both dogs went nuts, and unlike anything we have ever witnessed before or since in their lives and training, they acted like crackheads. They suddenly didn’t give a damn about training and manners; they just wanted to have more. We looked again at the label, then threw it out. It took days for the dogs to settle from it. That’s when we switched to species appropriate feeding like what Dr. Becker describes - clean, fresh raw meat, organic. Now in all of the foods, there are concerns about dogs developing taurine deficiency, which can wreak systemic havoc long term. Feeding fresh species appropriate raw food supplies taurine and enzymes in bioavailable form. Hey it can be a little bit of hassle, but long term function and long healthy life is worth it to us.

So here’s a digest, folks. Many, many of the dog foods with cool nature sounding names are actually just factory food, and may often be related to the ones that get recalled periodically. It is marketing. We choose to go with small companies with fresh, real, and as organic as possible ingredients. They have to contain real meat or fish, use oils that are not canola (which is an oil that is suitable for machinery, not dogs or humans), and that do not use animal meal or by-products. But read labels regularly. Things change; a food may not consistently remain it’s same formula or standard. One company, like Castor and Pollux that once was as a wonderful small company, at one point got purchased. This happens a lot. We read labels, then we discontinued using it.

We feel very comfortable then supplementing with kibble. But we stick to at least the quality of a company called Open Farm, which so far has been impeccable. We have also liked Origen and it’s other product, Acana. But again, you have to read labels, or may end up getting canola. It’s just all about staying current on research and ingredients.

Now, we can do everything right, eat special super diets, meditate every day, think pure thoughts, and spend extra time and money on the the finest of life…then get hit by a bus. We make our own type and level of choices. But for dog food (and our own food too), we think it is better for us, not to throw junk down the chute and expect our machinery to still operate optimally. That means we’ll drop over a hundred bucks for a big bag of dog food instead of less. But we sleep great, knowing that we are banking on optimal health in ways that we (can) control.

Bon appetite!
Peter
