[NAGDU] Guide Dog information

Some of the dog guide schools have really good videos that you can use to
supplement your own remarks. Some key points -
* Dogs are highly trained to guide by qualified dog guide trainers. Training
may require many months.
* Often, puppy raiser families have a role in basic training and
socialization.
* Many guide dogs are bred to be guide dogs.
* They are vital to our safety as blind travelers.
* The guide dog's single purpose is guiding their handlers. They are not
companion animals.
* Let the audience know about the bond of love dogs and handlers have and
that dogs enjoy working.
* Distinguish between guide dogs and companion animals (which are not
trained).
* Guide dog handlers have the right by law to travel with their dog to
public accommodations (e.g., stores and offices), their employment, and
programs of governments. Companion animal owners do not have these rights.
* Address etiquette that includes not petting the dog, not speaking to the
dog, not engaging with the dog (such as trying to make eye contact and
distract the dog).

Hope this helps.

Subject: [NAGDU] Guide Dog information

Hello to all Guide Dog users:

I was asked to speak about Guide Dogs at my Lions Club of Ormond Beach on
8/24/2023.

Any suggestions you think I should mention?

Age or mobility requirements, costs, application and wait times, available
grants or any other specifics?

You can email me directly at

AMedlar1 at gmail.com

I googled Guide dogs in US and here is link outlining guide dog schools by
state:

https://nfb.org/resources/guide-dog-resources

I am on my third guide dog from Guiding Eyes. His name is Frodo and will be
13 years old on 1/26/2024.

Frodo is now retired.
