Hello,
I started learning ASL in high school and just loved it. The summer after I took the class, I met a couple deaf-blind people while I was in a couple different summer program's. I learned tactile signing and became completely fine doing it.At one of the summer program's, I met a few SSPs. I talked to them for a little bit as well about what they did.
Last year, at the NFB national convention, I ran into one of the deaf-blind people. I signed with him for a while and talked with his SSP as well. The interpreters said that I should possibly think about becoming an SSP/interpreter, since I learned ASL quite quickly. I've thought about it quite a bit, and now I think I would like to do that.
I've looked into a couple program's where I could be certified as an SSP and/or interpreter. I would like to be of help in any way that I can. There is a couple program's that I can easily access easily.
Is there any suggestions from the deaf-blind community is looking for in and SSP/interpreter? Is there anything that I should pay attention while taking the classes and gaining more experience? Is there any way that I may be able to talk with some of you in person to get feed back? Thanks.
Hope to hear from you all soon,
Keitei Colton
