Marsha: Ask for a sign language interpreter to be present when you are taken in for the anesthesia.  Have him/her stay with you until you're taken back and be present when you come out of surgery. Have the interpreter keep your hearing aids in until the anesthesiologist puts you under, then take the aids after you are asleep and have them put in your ears before you wake.  This is what they did with me when I had my hysterectomy last November. My husband was not allowed in the surgery center (only recovery) so the interpreter stayed with me the whole time.   Interpreters can do voice interpreting as well. They will translate in the manner in which you are most comfortable.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Sincerely,
Tracie Inman

Hi,
As some of you know I have only been in the DB world for 2 years, so I admit I have alot to learn. I am needing ideas in what I should do. I have been having some medical issues, and when to the doctor this morning. I am being admitted to the hospital for tests on Monday. One of the tests I will need to be put asleep thus under anesthesia. They would like for me to take out my hearing aids. But what they do not understand, and have tried to explain, that if I remove my hearing aids, I will not hear important instructions. I am totally blind, so relying on my vision is not an option. What do I do? My husband will be there, we could also use sign if needed. But I can't have been the only one to have ever been in this situation.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you,

Marsha drenth

Marsha,

When I had my first cI surgery  2002, the doctor had my  husband cxome into
the operating room to answer  any questions they had to ask me.  When I was
out cold, they threw him out.

I hope everything's okay.  Remember, we have alunch date when you come to
HKNC.

Trish

Hi Marsha,
I have had numerous procedures under anesthesia and I keep my hearing
aids in and the use of the FM system.  All of my doctors are very
familiar with my needs and realize that if they want to communicate with
me and expect me to hear what they are saying; then I need to retain my
hearing aids during these procedures and in the recovery room.  You need
to be firm and explain to them your needs. I am sure they will understand.
Janice
