Thank you so much, Ed! You're a wealth of information! By the
way, is the Blind American also on the Internet Archive?

Ken--

You've come through. Thanks. I'm writing this to fill in a
little more information and to correct a couple of spelling
errors.

There indeed have been seven presidents of the Federation,
although we generally regard only three as being important in
shaping the organization.

Jacobus tenBroek resigned as president at the 1961 convention
because he was tired of the faction fight known as the civil war.
John Taylor, as first vice-president, became president. TenBroek
remained active in the NFB, for a while editing the Braille
Monitor (and its temporary replacement, the Blind American).
Taylor stepped down after a short time and Perry Sundquist
succeeded him. Sundquist was an old friend of tenBroek's from
the California School for the Blind. At the next convention
Russell Kletzing was elected president and he remained president
for four years, until tenBroek decided to run again.

At the 1966 convention. tenBroek was re-elected president, and
Kenneth Jernigan was elected first vice-president. Just a few
weeks later, tenBroek learned of the cancer that would kill him
within two years. Upon tenBroek's death, Jernigan became
president

As others pointed out, Jernigan stepped down temporarily in favor
of Ralph Sanders. He returned to the presidency after one year,
and Sanders eventually left the NFB. Marc Maurer was elected
president, with Jernigan's support, in 1986.

It's all in Walking Alone, Marching Together. It's also in the
Monitor, which has been published since 1957 (as the Blind
American for 1961 to 1964). We have digitized the entire run of
the Monitor. Issues for 1957 and 1958, and every year since 1985
are available at
www.nfb.org/nfb/Braille_Monitor.asp<http://www.nfb.org/nfb/Braill
e_Monitor.asp>. Issues for 1959 through 1984 are available at
the website of the Internet Archive:
www.archive.org<http://www.archive.org/>. Please contact me if
you need assistance getting to the issues on the Internet Archive
site. We will eventually copy them all to the NFB website, but
we first need to clean up the files. (The Internet Archive
mounted the files without proofreading.)

Chris, the first president of the NfB, was Dr. Jacobus TenBroek,
The second

president in 1961, was John Taylor, the third one was Perry
Sonquist, the

fourth one was Russel Clexing, the next one was Dr. Jacobus
TenBroek, who

was elected president in 1966, who unfortunately died on March
27, 1968.

The first Vice-President was Dr. Jernigan, who was elected in
his own right

in 1968.

Ralph Sanders was president for only one year, 1977, to 1978.

After Dr. Jernigan steped down in 1986, Dr. Marc Maurer was
elected

president, and he will be up for re-election in 2012.

Chris,

No. Ralph Sanders was president of the Federation in 1978.

There are

folks on this list who when in the movement then who can better

speak of

why Dr. Jernigan was not. If I remember correctly it was for

health

reasons. Anyone wish to fill in the gaps in my memory?

I would like to say one more thing about Mr. Sanders. In

listening to

his speech it is obvious the leadership thought a lot of him at

the

time. They referred to him as "our young president". It made

me very

sad to hear that considering how things turned out.

 Hi Michael,

That makes sense, thank you! Just one clarification question:

Mr.

Sanders was President of what? I'm pretty sure he wasn't the

National

President, that was Dr. Jernigan from 1968 to 1986.

 Chris,

I do not know all the criteria for a recording to be included on

the nfb

website. I'm sure it is a case by case basis. I do know the

reason the

1978 banquet address by Ralph Sanders is not included. Mr.

Sanders put

himself in the position of being an opponent of the Federation

some time

after he served as president. Taking this into consideration,

understand the speech itself is not by any means a great speech

and does

not further our cause by being posted. I suppose that is one

criteria

for inclusion on the national website. The recording has to

further our

cause. The national website is not a depository for all things

historical concerning the Federation. The library is. (I

think)

Let me clarify. We do want to have the recordings in our

available through NFB.org is another question.

Hi Michael, go ahead and keep the tapes.

When I listen to them, the quality is very good.

I don't understand why the National Office wasn't interested in

them.

I hope the tapes were the originals.

Yes I will be at convention in Orlando, Florida.

 See you then.

 Kenneth,

You sent those tapes to me. I've done a little research on the

subject to refresh my memory and found the original thread that

led to

you sending me the tapes. There was an interest in hearing the

1978

Banquet address by Ralph Sanders. You stated you had a record

of it

and told anyone who wanted it to contact you. You then posted

the

 following:

"Hi Ryan, I just put my 12 inch record on to a cassette tape,

and I

will send it to Michael Freholm either tomorrow or Monday.

The second side of that record is where Kenneth Jernigan

addressed The

Brotherhood of Teamsters on August 15, 1978.

I used a small Cassette Recorder, and a Talkingbook Record

player.

I also recorded Why I am a Federationist and Disability and

Visibility

 By Kenneth Jernigan.

I believe both speeches were done in 1974.

 Ken Chrane "

I made a digital recording of the Banquet Address and the speech

to

the Teamsters and, if memory serves, I sent a copy to RyanO. My

main

interst was of the Banquet speech. I just wanted to hear it and

so

did others but the National Office is in no way interested in

putting

this on the website and, thus, we will not be putting this up on

a

Living History website. And even if we were, the sound quality

is not

very good. I made a digital recording of a tape recording of a

12

inch record. The recordings are not of the quality to be put up

on

the national website. As for the other two Jernigan speeches,

the

quality wasn't good enough. Perhaps the national office could

do a

better job in making a digital copy than I.

I still have the tapes you sent me Ken and will bring them to

Orlando

and return them to you. if you are going to be there. I

apologize

for any misunderstanding concerning the final destination of

these

recordings. I was interested in possibly putting them up on the

living history website once it's up and running but do not

recall

saying I would get them put up on the national website. My

apologizes

 again for any misunderstanding.

 Best, Michael

Thanks for posting this Tina and thanks to all those who

responded. I

was planning on posting the same question tomorrow but you beat

me to

it. I was also hoping to announce some other stuff but I don't

have

confirmation yet.... Nevertheless, it's important that we don't

duplicate recordings (not that it will really hurt anything but

it

would be a waste of resources.) and we need to make sure that

important things get recorded. If anyone has any suggestions in

this

matter please post them to the list.

The Living History meeting is scheduled for Sunday June 3 from 7

to

8:30. Hope to see you all there!

 Have a safe trip,

 Michael Freholm

This list has been almost dead over the past several months, so

I

thought I'd get things rolling by asking what people plan to

record

for archive during the convention. I will be doing the

Membership

committee meeting, as well as the Newsletter and Publications

committee. They're on separate nights this year, which is a

first.

Other than that, I'm wide open.

I also plan to do the Living History group meeting this year, as

usual.

I'm sure this has been brought up before, but what good is it

when

people record all this stuff, but it only reaches the one who

does the

recordings and no one else? I'd like to get us thinking

seriously

about establishing a web site where this great stuff can be

distributed.

Whatever you do, bring your mp3 players and voice recorders with

you

to Orlando, so we can add to our already rich collection. Let's

all

try to contribute something this year. Thanks.
