Sue,
 
You can knit a normal stitch and when you pull the loop up on the right  
needle do not take the yarn off the left needle.  Stick the point of your  
right needle going from front to back into the back loop on the left  needle.  
Yarn over needle on left side and pull this loop forward sliding  yarn off 
left needle.
 
Now another way of doing this especially making mittens is called "make a  
stitch...
 
When you want to make a stitch as in increasing take your left needle and  
pull up yarn between the stitch on your right needle and stitch on your left 
 needle[it is like the bar that is between the stitches] now do a knit into 
this  yarn on the left needle .
