Hi Crocheters:

I have another question about this off-set shell pattern I'm attempting to do. I have been able to work it out as given on the web site I previously posted, except I have a question pertaining to my stitch count at the end of each row. The pattern directs that at the end of the second row I should be able to work 9 individual DC's. When I get to the end of each row, right after I complete the last open shell, when I count what is left there are only 8 DC's from the previous row. and I work 1 dc in each of these 8 DC's from the previous row.

After working the 8 dc's then at the very end, I have been chaining 3. When I start the row anew, I again work 8 DC in each dc. It all works out. I am confused as to why the pattern directions refer to the ch 3 at the end/beginning of each row as a 9th DC. It seems to me that if I was able to dc 1 in each of the next 9 dc's then the rest of the pattern directions would not work out. Isn't the chain 3 simply a way to turn yourself around and get up to the next level for starting the next row? Maybe its just me and I need to go back to something simpler. I think I might start on some of the blocks covered in the "Crochet Your Way" book, when/ & if I am able to complete this shawl.

Thanks for any explanations to make this clearer than mud,.
