I've been a Braille mentor for years. The oldest person I ever taught was 78 when she started and she really did learn everything. I worked with a friend who was in this thirties but he never really got very good. He didn't work on it at home and you can't learn it sitting in my kitchen for an hour once a week. He is also loosing his hearing, and if he looses it completely, no technology is going to do it. Finally we decided he should just consintrate on learning the alphabet so that he can at least label things and write notes to himself, but he doesn't really use it. I helped him label his CDs and I guess he does read those. I think it is just very individual. I would think that learning just enough to write things down would be helpful. I have been a Braillle reader all my life, and I'm not a speed-queen, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I think it is very sad that young people don't think it is necessary because of their dependence on technology. Sue

You have hit it on the head - I see it as being soooooo slow, and that I
would take forever and never be very good at it. I do not enjoy it at all
and at this point in my life I feel like there is no reason I need to do it.
I think to be proficient, meaning that I could stand and give a lecture
using braille, would take many years to achieve. I can't imagine someone my
age really becoming proficient at it. I can "read" books and knit at the
same time now, and I like that a lot. I think that if I want to learn
something, it would be to concentrate on a foreign language that I really
want to learn, just for my own satisfaction. Lynda
