I never could relate to the students in my class at the Iowa department for
the blind who were just learning Braille. I'd known Braille all my life, so
of course, to me it was a breeze. Then, I started learning to write print,
and I felt the pain. I suddenly knew what it was like to take five minutes
to write a simple sentence. I guess Life works in interesting ways and God
has very good ideas when it comes to teaching empathy!

Hi -- I think sometimes the slowness of a beginner learning to read braille
is the biggest hurdle, not the prejudice against it. It isn't just picking
up the code -- that's just a little memorization -- it's getting your
fingers and your brain accustomed to recognizing those dot patterns. At
least that has been my biggest hurdle. I have known the codes since I was
in grade school, but had some print vision until recent years. I have files
labeled in braille and I take notes in braille, but to do any kind of
volumous reading is just miserably slow. My speed has improved a bit since
I started teaching sunday school a couple of years ago -- it gives me a
chance to read outlines real time as I'm teaching a class. That has forced
me to pick it up a bit.
Hope you can get your speed up. I use an embosser that is interpoint, and I
think this is the reason why it seems to punch dots just a tiny hair's width
from where it seems like it's supposed to be, which makes some words harder
to recognize. But recognizing dot patterns takes practice.

Well, maybe too if your life was in upheaval from loosing your sight and
maybe you were feeling a little negative towards Braille and all you had to
newly learn or things you had to relearn just to get buy from day to day it
may not have been the right time for you to learn Braille. At least you
learned Grade I and can perhaps jot down a phone number or mark a bottle or
skein of yarn with a Braille label. All I can tell you is that between both
my talking computer & Braille I can tend to all my household business from
paying bills on line to processing mail ... all important mail that has to
be saved gets Brailled with who its from, date, amounts, anything that is
important to know right off the top when I am looking through envelopes. So
many other ways Braille can be useful I can't list them all. The talking
computer would not be enough on its own for me to take care of all my stuff
independantly. Maybe one day, if you feel like you're having a difficult
time finding stuff or keeping organized you will reconsider learning more
Braille when the motivation is stronger. Soap box off ... at least you did
give Braille a try.
