Greg,
That is exactly it. The thickness of the piece of wood is determined by 
wrapping yarn and measuring the groove. I just checked and my mom said that 
this was actually made by my dad to help me use up yarn. I was a young teen 
and newly blind and so my dad loved to find ways to help.
Email me off list if you have more questions. I know it is a great way to 
use up bits of yarn and especially if you want to make a crazy quilt 
pattern.
