[Nfb-krafters-korner] Costing out your losses / Story Readings

Carla,
Wow, someone that really is reading and understanding what I'm trying to have everyone understand.
Perhaps Carla (or others who have gone through this experience), can enlighten our members on how much it costs you for each CD you have to cut. The cost of the cd, the mailing, the protective envelopes, the additional fees if you have to have professional editing equipment or an engineer to help you produce it and all other expenses I haven't listed. Just putting a "c" on a product isn't providing anything. If you're publishing for a magazine, the time to write the article, editor's fees, submission fees, costs of printing and packaging patterns and on and on and on.
I know a person here in CT that does a small portion of this for a local radio and public broadcasting cable station and has lost so much of their own money that they had to stop.
Perhaps some of our members who have gone through this experience can enlighten others as to why this point is so important. What are all the costs incurred and how much have you lost. Please educate us. It is a very important topic. I'm sure our readers have no idea of how much is lost but would be interested in hearing and perhaps take a different view after understanding. Including all that is given out of the goodness of your heart. If any one knows what the professional costs are, please let us know.  Also, include in this any fees that you have to pay to professional guilds for the professional knowledge you have obtained in order to create or teach your craft. Guilds like Needlework, Professional Clothing PAC (to produce clothing patterns) can cost anywhere from $250 to $500 a year for membership and you aren't allowed membership unless you are recommended to join, just so you can add their professional credentials to your products.
Your machinery costs, electric rates, travel, etc. Figure all this into the cost of one CD.
I would find it very interesting to hear these stories, people need to know the other side of the coin.
  Thank you,
  Audrey J. Wellner, Secretary
  NFB Krafters Korner division

Audrey, I just want you to know that I for one really enjoyed you reading to us. I too have had to fight and work for everything that I get. I know that it really makes me feel bad when I hear someone say "I'll just get someone to make a copy of your Cd's. That way I won't have to pay for them." I had to pay to get them made! If everyone gets them for free, then I'm stuck with lots of Cd's and a giant bill that I can't pay. Over the years, I have given several of my albums away to folks that I know did not have money to spare, but would enjoy hearing them. For this, I have no regrets. However, I think that sometimes as visually impaired people, we need to be very careful to keep in mind that we are blind not helpless. No one owes us anything, but "love." Please forgive me if I am out of line. I just am thankful for what I have and wish everyone felt the same way. The attitude of most people is "all take and no give." Thank you for giving of your time.
 Sincerely, Carla
