[Nfb-krafters-korner] making palm baskets

Hello all, I just have a minute to send a quick reply because Ed
is hooking up the car to the motor home as I take one last check
for email before we take off from my son's home in Key West on
our way to Fort Meyers. THERE is a wild bird center half way up
the Keys that I want to stop at later today.
The palms are green right off the tree. They are fairly flexible
but there is a small rib along one side that you have to take
care that it doesn't snap. The leaves are smooth, about three
feet long and taper from about an inch and a half wide to a
point. Sorry I have to run now. I will be happy to tell you
more later. I don't know when I will be able to read or send
email again, but I plan to call into the class tonight.
Carol

Now you got me thinking here. Palm leaves, are they dried palm
leaves or
like right off the tree? If they are dried do you have to wet
them like
you do for reed baskets?
Did you do it like the coil baskets?

Wow that sounds like fun! I think it is awesome! I would love to
know the
texture and the like of the basket. I know you mentioned palm
leaves...but
do they stay flexible or does it keep its shape?

I have to tell you all about my morning. We were walking down
the street
in Key west and a man was sitting on the sidewalk making
baskets. We
stopped and I asked him if he would teach me how to do it. He
said he
charges 40 dollars to teach how to make a basket. So he taught
me how to
make a basket from coconut palm leaves. He was a nice guy and a
patient
teacher. Of course I was the first blind person he ever taught
so it was
a
challenge for him to verbalize the directions but he did a
pretty good
job
of it. I can't say I could make a palm basket by myself now,
but it was
fun and I have a pretty good idea of how it is done. I got to
keep the
basket I made and he also gave me a basket and a hat he made.
I am usually a quiet, introverted person so this was certainly
out of my
comfort zone but I am glad I did it.
Henrietta, I think ed will send Dan pictures.
P. S. I gave him a twenty dollar tip and I think he got some
free
advertising.
