You can always make the toes and heels a different color then the  sock.  
That would not be too hard since you would use the other color just  in the 
short row shaping rows.  Just need to work your ends of the yarn in  well.

I was thinking that a pair of slippers would be cute  having the top cuff 
one 
color and the majority of the slipper another  color with a wide stripe of 
the cuff color around the foot.  You  could even alternate colors to be in 
STYLE!  *grin
