[Nfb-krafters-korner] SSK Knit Stitch

Hi Susan,

Originally when I first learned to do a SSK I did it like you. I slipped
each stitch individually knit-wise to the right needle, and then slipped
them back to the left needle and did a knit 2 together. I was told that
this was giving the stitches a double twist, because when you do a regular
knit stitch it gets a bit of a twist.

So then I did as described above and once the stitches were back on the left
needle I did a knit 2 together through the back of the stitches. But this
seemed crazy to me because slipping them back to the left needle was an
extra step.

Now I slip each stitch knit-wise to the right needle, fumble around until I
can get the 2 stitches snugged up together, insert the left needle into the
front of the 2 slipped stitches, and then proceed with knitting them through
the back of the stitch. I have no need for doing any more slipping stitches
back and forth as you described.

I would like to know if anyone has any tips for getting the 2 slipped
stitches snugged up together, or for inserting the left needle into the
front of the 2 slipped stitches. Any recommendations on how to hold my
hands, which fingers do you monitor or manipulate the slipped stitches in
preparation for inserting the left needle for knitting them, etc. My
sighted friends say that they pick up each slipped stitch individually
visually so that they are sure to get into the stitch in the right place.

By any chance, am I doing the SSK wrong by knitting through the back of the
slipped stitches?

Annette

Hi Annette,

This is how I do the SSK. I slip the two stitches as if to knit, one at a
time, from the left needle to the right needle. Then instead of inserting
the left needle along side the right needle and knitting them together with
the left needle, I slip the stitches off of the right needle back onto the
left needle and then knit them together with the right needle. The main
purpose of this stitch combination is to put a twist in each stitch to the
right, knitting them together and off the needles with a right twist and
decreasing a stitch in the process. I believe this also gives the finished
stitch a tilt or slant to the right . Whether you knit together and off
your needle with the left or right needle doesn't matter because they both
give you the same twist/slant. I think sliding them back on the left is
easier for me. Also, if I'm not mistaken, if you do it the way they
suggest, you are pulling your working yarn loop through with the left
needle, dropping the two slipped stitches off the right needle, which then
leaves your new stitch on the left needle and you still have to then slip it

back onto the right needle. Too much back and forth for me.
