Most of the work is done with colors and you can make up any design you want ... stripes, boxes, diamonds and much more elaborate pictures.  You can translate knitted or needlepoint  types of designs into the bead design. 
There is a book by Don Pierce called "beading On A Loom" and at the end of the book are museum quality designs that take hundreds of thousands of beads.  Some of these designs I am pretty sure use different types of beads. 
For what I have done with it thus far, I keep it simple and am pretty sure I'd never, never want to make a project with 100,000 beads!.

You can, however, make some of the more traditional Indian style designs with a few hundred beads.  A number of years back I purchased from the Saint Joseph's Lacota Sue Indian Reservation beaded ornaments.  Say one was a snowman, but by feeling the shape you would not know it was a snowman unless you knew because the work's shape was a little abstract, and the picture was done with various color beads.
