[Nfb-krafters-korner] classes & membership

Thank you so much Annette. You have touched on so many of the issues that we have faced in the past.

Theresa and I have spoken about making some audio beginner's classes and we have done one. I do not know if it is still available for download as we did it for a chat with recording basic crochet for the Game site. Cathy can you tell us the name of the Game site?

We have thought of possibly doing beginners lectures and putting them up on the Apple Aps site, but there isn't enough hours in a day for the folks that donate their time to check out all the ins and outs and how to do it.

There was something mentioned on the list within the last few weeks that we might have used some of the money in our account to perchase some equipment that we would need to accomplish some of this, but there is not enough hours in a day for the few of us that would take a look and find out what we need and how to do it.

We need your help to move forward with some of this stuff.

I have talked to Dr. Mauer [Attorney] and Charles Brown [Attorney] for advise on what is right and wrong in the past. Just as I did last week in seeking out President Riccobono to answer the questions that you had put forth to me.

So if you want to be part of these changes may I suggest you offer up your time as I will be looking to form some committees to check out the possibility and choices of change we can consider. The committees will need to do the work and spend the time to come up with the options we have and do the research.

Joyce

Subject: Re: [Nfb-krafters-korner] classes & membership

There have been many discussions in the past of saving and redistributing past classes. However, there are many issues that prevent us from being able to do this. That does not mean that we can't come up with a way to offer something, so read to the end and see what you think.

When a teacher prepares to teach a class, she/he might be using a copyrighted pattern and should have obtained permission from the pattern owner to use that pattern for that one class. It would be an infringement of copyright to redistribute that class.

If the teacher developed the instructional material, then that material belongs to that teacher and redistributing it would be an infringement of the copyright of their intellectual property.

When a class is being taught and the teacher announces that the class will be recorded, and students elect to remain on the call or do not verbally object to the recording, then they have granted permission to be recorded for the purpose of that class. The recording is for the personal use of the participants and we do not obtain any additional permission. If we wanted to redistribute that class, we would have to have permission from every participant to share the recording. The bottom line is that we really do not want to have to manage this legal ball of wax.

So with all of that said, I do believe that there is a way to offer some classes via pre-recorded telephone and/or e-mail classes. A class or lesson could be recorded with just the teacher or with 1 or 2 students. This would have to be a very controlled situation to ensure very clear instructions as well as high audio quality. The e-mail classes would have to have a proven record and would have to include very detailed instructions broke up into manageable segments.

With either of these options it will take a lot of volunteer hours to plan the class. The phone/audio class would need to be recorded, and re-recorded if need be. The audio files as well as the electronic files for the e-mail classes will need to be stored, backed up and managed. Then there is the management of getting the class info to the member when they want to take the class, or maybe the class would be put into the class line-up on a regularly occurring scheduling, but it will still need to be managed.

So while this all sounds good, if we don't have the man-power to accomplish it we will not succeed. A lot of volunteer hours already go into what we already have going. If there are people with the skills, talents and time to do this, then it is worth looking into. We have had a lot of new and great ideas tossed around lately, so the board and the membership will have to pick and choose which tasks are reasonable for us to accomplish now and which ones can be taken on in the future.

As we look to building our future, I would like to explain how continuing to require students to sign up for classes and for teacher to take attendance helps us. The NFB Crafters Division is really a leader in our outreach efforts. As we continue to grow our membership and expand what our division has to offer, we will need statistics to show what we have accomplished. Knowing how many students have participated in our classes speaks volumes as we promote who we are and what we have to offer. Looking at our past data will help us predict where we are going in the future. If we want to reach out to more and more people to let them know that blindness does not have to prevent them from expressing their creativity, then by default we are going to grow. With growth come change and structure. If you are cooking dinner for 2 people, you can probably give it little thought and have it on the table in minutes. If you are going to cook dinner for 30 people, then you are going to have to do some planning, and you are going to want to know who is actually coming to dinner.

Ok, I think I am done and had better step down off of my soap box. I have not posted any of this to start a battle, but rather as food for thought.

Annette

As a new member, I'd like to see recordings of past phone classes, especially the beginner ones, because it would keep teachers from having to repeat elementary stuff. Loom knitting would be a good example.
Looking through the archives, I saw some discussion of a members area, so presumably, you used to post recordings there.
