[Nfb-krafters-korner] Want To Know Wednesday

Ramona like you I remember crafts from childhood. Honestly I never liked art class or arts and crafts. I was near sighted and teachers were always scolding me for coloring out of the lines. Also since I was so near sighted I did not see colors and objects the same way others did and was constantly being told trees, flowers and such aren't that color or don't look that way. We did have a few pottery projects in grade school which was better for me.

In high school I went to the school for the blind and took what was then called home economics. I loved that class, especially the cooking and sewing. For the first time in my life I felt like I might be creative and able to do crafts. I made a skirt, shirt and dress all of which were nice enough to actually wear.

My Mom tried to teach me to crochet, but I could never get it. She is not the most patient person and she is the type that wants you to do it exactly like her. She doesn't seem to understand if you use an alternative technique with the same result it's ok. Anyway I think a lot of it is a mother daughter thing; we just aren't the best teacher student combination. Lol

In college I took a hand built pottery class and loved it. I got to make some really cool things that turned out nicely. I took two more hand built classes because I liked it so much. I used to sell my stuff and people actually purchased it.

For the last two or three years I've had the desire to create and that is how I ended up at Krafters Korner. I now own eleven knitting looms and a new sewing machine. I have a closet full of supplies and a head full of ideas.

Well that is more than my first craft project. It is more of my life's craft history.

Nella

Perhaps it shows we are an aging group when we go back to childhood thoughts. I remember always feeling like a failure because my paper and paint and coloring was never much good. moddling Clay was much more satisfying. Making and delivering May baskets in about the fourth grade was fun and successful. I actually had a craft class in fourth grade where we learned basket-making and a other things using different materials than most of us had on hand. We made ash trays with potter's clay. They were glazed and baked and given for presents. I also learned to knit from a houseparent at the school for the blind in about the fourth or fifth grade. And I'm still doing that. My mother made a lot of our clothes, so I insisted she teach me to sew during the summer before my sixth grade year, and she did. My sister liked to play in mud, but neither mud nor gardening were as interesting to me, at least not before harvest. So I've been doing crafts for more than sixty years. Still lots to learn.
