May I suggest, as far as yarn choices, It will take time, but it will teach you, too.  Pick out a pattern onlineand get the yarn and needles suggested in making this pattern.  Make the sample gauge swatch and ajust your needles so it will come out the size stated.  Now don't just jump into making it, but take your time and treat this as a learning lesson.  Once you got that done make the project exactly as written.  Do not alter it and you will have an example of this done according to the pattern,  It gives you time to learn and understand the pattern and don't forget you have all of us here to help you out if you get stuck.  Once you finish this project, I am sure you can find someone to give it to if it doesn't fit who you had in mind for making it for.  
So now you can make adjustments for the project to fit any one you want to make it for.  Measuring gauges and determining length and how many stitches make how many inches is important to learn so you can adjust size, length, loose fitting, or making whatever you want to and knowing how to adjust or make up pattern stitches on whatever.

Remember thos people who writes these patterns had to start out with learning the above.  They did not just jump into doing it.

My husband and I have a Viking. And we really needed a sewing machine expert! 

I wish we could get a craft specialist in general so if I wanted to go yarn shopping, they could tell me how many yards sounds right for a project and what colors go together...
