The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.
Research Title: Overcoming tactile clutter using coatings on textures surfaces
Being conducted by: University of Delaware
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to examine whether surface coatings can reduce tactile clutter and improve texture recognition in tactile graphics. Participants will complete a matching task in which they explore a test board containing multiple textures and match them to a reference board; some textures are physically identical but differ only by the presence of a coating. By comparing matching accuracy, we aim to determine whether coatings enhance discriminability of textures and to identify coating “texture combinations that perform best for designing more effective tactile graphics.
Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study
Participants will explore tactile boards using their hands and complete a texture-matching task by comparing a test board to a reference board. The boards contain multiple textures, some of which are identical in geometry but differ only by the presence of a surface coating. The study is expected to take approximately 30 minutes per participant.
Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, We offer $20 Amazon gift cards to participants
