Yes, I've heard all these people talk about having somebody to go around
with the, and sit in class and take notes for them. And I wonder what it's
worth. Why can't they take their own notes? I ran around school myself,
and I'm totally blind. Teachers said they would let me out of class five
minutes early so I could get to my next class, but they kept forgetting.
So, I just let them forget, and got out in the halls with everybody else. I
actually didn't have a cane for part of the time. I have had arguments with
people who talk about provisions that have to be made for them when they are
working; and the ones they are talking about are things they don't need,
because they could learn to do them themselves. And they use ADA when they
don't need it to justify their arguments. I remember after I lost my job,
and I went back to Helen Keller Services, which used to be the industrial
Home for the Blind. There was all kinds of noise in the clerical room, with
everybody's screenreaders blasting out through the speakers. When I told
them they had to learn how to work quietly on a job, some of them told me:
"Well, they have to let me do it like this as an accommodation of the ADA!
When I worked, I had everything coming out of my headphones. I actually had
my brother make me a little box with jacks and volume controls so I could
patch everything in together. But even if people didn't have that, they had
those split headphones, or some people used two pairs of them. But some
people think that everybody has to make special accommodations for them that
aren't necessary. No wonder a lot of people don't get jobs! Pam.

Hi Judy,

Well I do think that we did become more independent and resourceful as a
result of having to do everything ourselves. Yes, I remember having to go to
the English department to find out what books I would need for the next
semester classes so that I could order them on real to real tape from RSVP.
When I asked the lady at the desk what books would be used for the class she
told me oh the list is over there on the bulletin board. Duh

No students don’t have to do any of that legwork. It is all done for them.
They are provided escorts to class no takers and special accommodations for
tests. I think the consequence of this is that they don’t learn the
independence that we did learn. They go off to their first job expecting all
kinds of accommodations.

What is frustrating is that the unemployment among blind people is still
70%. The accommodations and social attitudes might have changed but I’m
afraid the independence and self-reliance level has decreased to the point
where people are finding it hard to keep a job.

Yes, I still have one of those APH handy cassette players also. I was not
as lucky as you to learn braille as a child. I graduated from high school
being able to read it a second grade level. I did finally complete the
Hadley course in UAB three years ago and I have my certificate hanging on
the wall in my living room. Rather late than never

JODY
