If they accept credit cards, it seems easy to automatically bill you for a renewal.  I get this service from www.mydomain.com

Nobody wants to risk losing a domain name because they forgot to provide billing info in time.

If I can pay various bills via automatic charge to my credit card or bank 
draft, have various memberships renewed automatically I have a right to 
expect domain hosts to provide this service. And no one thinks of such 
conveniences as hand-holding. This is a service that is very much 
appreciated by millions of people. Webmasters ought to be just as 
intelligent and demand that domain hosts offer this convenience to their 
customers.
