[Nfbc-info] Accessible Point-of-Sale Machines at Fresh & Easy

Hi Tim,

A "Fresh & Easy" replaced my Ralph's after the 2004 grocery store strike. I
have been in there once or twice, and haven't been back. I guess it is
because it is all self-serve, which means being dependent upon others to do
my shopping. Also, all I can find to purchase in there are staple. I do shop
at Trader Jo's, but have a similar feeling because I can't do a full grocery
shop there. To me it's a specialty store.

Hi Eileen,

Yes, we should have the same choices that sighted people have when
purchasing items from retailers. We have talking ATMs, BART ticket machines
etc. why can't we also have talking point-of-sale terminals in retail
establishments?

People interested in this issue who have visited Fresh & Easy should contact
me at (410) 415-3493 or telder[at]trelegal[dot]com.

Regards,

Tim Elder

Hi,

I was just in Radio Shack a week ago, and I needed to use the credit feature
because there was no keypad to choose a debit transaction.Interestingly
enough, my Wells Fargo branch will need to plug in a keypad in order for me
to have access to the keypad to enter my pin number when I use a teller.
Most of the time, the tellers don't want to be bothered, so once again the
bank is not accessible to me. They were one of the first institutions that
installed talking ATM machines, but they don't have a POI machine that has
both a touch screen with a keypad attached. It's important to be able to
have control over making transactions, even it it only includes swiping the
card, and entering the pin number. If this is not an option, then I need to
choose a credit transaction. It would be nice to be able to have the choice
in how I want to conduct POI business transactions.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Californians,

NFB is looking closely at the accessibility of point-of-sale terminals in
retail establishments. Most of us would like to have independent access to
point-of-sale terminals in every store so that we don't have to ask a store
employee to enter our personal information or take control of our credit or
debit cards when making purchases. There is a strong argument that the law
requires such independent access to point-of-sale terminals. However, no
courts have currently addressed this issue and most if not all retail stores
require that a blind shopper rely on a store employee to use its
point-of-sale machines.

The NFB is specifically interested in hearing about experiences with the
Fresh & Easy chain. Our legal team wants to interview members who have
attempted to use the self-checkout terminals at Fresh & Easy and were
required to wait for an employee before conducting a transaction.

Interested individuals should contact Timothy Elder of the TRE Legal
Practice at (410) 415-3493 or telder[at]trelegal[dot]com.

Regards,

Tim Elder
