I have mixed feelings about posting this position. A local organization for
the blind is seeking a Program Director (rec. coordinator). However, it
appears as though only the sighted need apply.   Your point of view? Does
anyone know if a qualified blind person can legally be excluded from this
position based on driving "as needed".

 Job                          Description        

 

Position Overview: The Program Coordinator identifies new activities and
programs, manages existing programs and monthly activities for adults and
children who are visually impaired. Responsibilities also include managing
the monthly newsletter. The person in this position works closely with the
volunteer coordinator and the executive director to recruit volunteer
drivers, facilitators and assistants.  Responsibilities: Identifies key
partnerships with other agencies and government entities to develop

short- and long-term recreation and life-enrichment programming.
Ultimately responsible for program calendar for the year. Attends to
logistical needs of instructors to ensure the most effective learning
environment possible.  Maintains data for all BCCSD and private events and
manages special events on an as-needed basis.  Drives blind community
members in agency vehicles as needed.  Inputs program and transportation
data into spreadsheet on weekly basis and prepares a monthly report for the
executive

director.     

 

 Qualifications       

 

Must have a general interest in and capability of working with adults with
disabilities.  Must possess a California Driver's License and maintain an
excellent record. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.  Must possess
strong computer skills including proficiency in MS Office Suite,
specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Excellent written, telephone and
oral communication skills at a high functioning level.  Bilingual
English/Spanish preferred.  Ability to work with people in a respectful,

culturally-sensitive manner.  Ability to complete all tasks with a high
degree of accuracy and in a manner to meet deadline and compliance
requirements.  At least two years of experience working with persons with
disabilities, or two years of recreation or program activity management
experience.  Must have reliable transportation to and from agency and to
perform community outreach.  Must be physically capable of lifting and
moving 20 pounds.      

 

Additional                          Information       

 

Position Type: Part-time, under 20 hours per week, non-exempt, $10 per hour.
Must be available to work daytime and nighttime shifts seven days a week,
and split shifts depending on program and special event needs.  To be
