[NFBC-Info] NFB/CA/IE walk A Mile

All,

In 2016 the "Foundation Fighting Blindness" started a campaign called "How
Eye see it". The plan was for sighted people to put on sleep shades and
perform tasks while taking videos of their actions. The intent was to show
"how eye see" blind people performing tasks by sighted people performing
them under sleep shades. The plan was then for people to put up their videos
on a web site.

As all of us know, the results were horrifying and disgusting. So,
Federationists began creating their own videos of themselves performing
tasks. They posted their videos on the same web site completely overwhelming
and overtaking the other content. The FFB took down the page after a bit.

The result was a meeting between President Riccobono and leaders of the FFB.
Such a meeting should have occurred much earlier, but the FFB leadership
thought they knew all they needed to know about blindness and demonstrated,
until their campaign, that upstart blind people couldn't teach them
anything.

Why the history lesson, because what Jim and Brian have already said is
correct and true. "The biggest problem with blindness", I believe President
Riccobono said in a speech, "is that sighted people haven't tried it".
Trying blindness does not mean simply dawning sleep shades and then
attempting to perform a task. Sighted people learned to do tasks using their
eyes. Blind people learned to do the same tasks using alternative techniques
to sight. We call them "alternative techniques" because we have learned that
these alternatives are just as good as eye sight.

Anything, including the proposed contest, will not change sighted attitudes
for the better. I think there are interest contests and activities we and
sighted people can do together, but not something that won't succeed without
proper advanced training.

Best Regards,

Michael Hingson

Hang on!

You want to put folks who have had no blindness skills training under
learning shades, and video the results?

Have you talked about how to manage this in a way that won't reinforce
negative stereotypes about blindness, what to do with the video results, or
what messages this will send into our communities?

I'm very concerned about this fundraiser, and would love to hear more about
how it's being managed.

thanks,

Jim
