[nfbcs] Blind Guy gets New Job

Nicole,

Tom is still at Comcast, and he spoke to our Computer Science meeting at
the NFB national convention last Wednesday. I think that hiring someone
to deal with access shows some good faith on the part of a given company,
but it really is no guarantee that everything will be accessible or that
anything will happen for that matter. It is always possible that a
person is hired to create the appearance of caring. From what Tom said,
though, it sounds as though he is having some impact, but I also think it
is worth complaining about specific problems. He particularly talked
about work being done for a set-top box that will talk, but of course,
that doesn't help one pay their bills. We also learned this week that
Ray Kurzweil was hired as the director of Engineering for Google. Again,
he has a real sensitivity to our accessibility, but again, no one person
can just make things happen. Perhaps someone else who attended the
meeting will remember if he gave a contact web or email address.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson
